L.S Lowry did not identify his portraits, giving them general titles such as ‘Head of a Man (With Red Eyes)’. This portrait was produced in 1938, the year before his mother, whom he had a turbulent relationship with, passed away. The use of red for the sitters eyes and nose is evident of the grief and anger Lowry was feeling, a rare expression of emotion in his work. This print is colour matched to the original painting and approved by The Lowry.
